Tulip Pedal Coming April 20
Head to the Skagit Valley on Saturday, April 20 for the Safe Kids/Group Health Tulip Pedal.
Now in its 32nd year, the event combines tulip tourism–where visitors gawk at vast swaths of color in the blooming tulip fields–with a fundraising event for Skagit County Medic One. The EMTs use the funds in a program to prevent unintentional injuries of children, focusing on wheeled sports and child passenger safety.
There are 20-, 40- and 60-mile routes, all in the flat valley. The shorteset ride goes from LaConner to Mt. Vernon through the tulip fields and back. The longer rides add in Padilla Bay, Samish Bay and Fir Island. All routes are on the roads, and cyclists need to be aware of significant car traffic from people driving to the tulip fields.
Riders get a map, a tulip and–while supplies last–a beanie. Rest stops with snacks are sprinkled around the course, and there is live music. The start line is open 7 a.m. to noon, at the middle school in LaConner.
