Emerald City Bike Ride Photos

The weather was great and the crowds of 7,000 cyclists were courteous and smiling for the Emerald City Bike Ride today in Seattle.

The ride celebrated the new SR 520 floating bridge — the longest such bridge in the world. But the ride offered much more, including a southbound trip into downtown Seattle on the Interstate 5 express lanes, which were closed to other traffic.

Chatting with a fellow ride leader and old friend Norm when riding the new bridge, I said I was looking forward to the express lane trip too. He said he was skipping it. “Did that in 1980,” Norm said. “The same day that Mt. St. Helens erupted.” OK, he topped me.

Here are images of today’s ride.

This first batch is on SR 520.

And then came the I-5 express lanes.

And finally, the International District.
